It is vitally important that the neocons be humiliated for their unilateralism, that they be discouraged from this sort of thing in the future .... but it is equally important that Iraq not be left in utter chaos, now that government and economic structure has been so completely destroyed ... there is a responsiblity that's been incurred here, it cannot be fulfilled now by simply wandering off, presumably to commit the same elsewhere .... in light of this i don't see how 'bring the troops home, all of them, now' can be the least evil of ways out of this mess
Better, imho, to find a way to force the neocons to the genuine alliance they should have had in the first place, and thereby get the responsibility spread on more shoulders, at the same time as the alliance works up an exit strategy, and gets it rolling ... what needs to happen is strong political pressure to encourage the busheviks to perform -
1. Confession - they must admit they made a serious mistake, in acting alone in haste on contrived evidence
2. Act of contrition - they must promise not to do it again, and to work toward a functioning parliament of democracies, which would decide such sovereign-nation issues in the future
3. The hail mary pass - full cooperation with such nations as enter the Iraq venture, and yes this does mean taking the reins of power out of the back rooms of Washington ... with the alliance committed to earliest practical turning of them over to the iraqui people
This probably won't happen, because they won't be able to choke down step 1, and it's absolutely necessary to avoid failure in Iraq .... catch-666, if you like ... probably the only thing we can do, is hunker down until they're voted out of office, and may the gods help us if that's not done fifteen months from now, and we have to wait another forty-eight |
