We do live in the same world. You just close your eyes, and filter out all facts that don't reinforce your pleasant National Mythology. For you, Americans always wear the purest White Hat, while the Communists and Nationalists, and now the Islamists, they always wear the darkest black hat. And anyone who points out shades of grey, they are nihilists and defeatists.
The Soviets would take people who didn't "think correct thoughts", label them as insane, put them away forever in asylums and Gulags. There are many Americans who think the same kind of thing should be done, to the unpatriotic "wrong thinkers" here. The 5th Column back-stabbers who are secretly working for America's defeat. Isn't that the way you think of me? And we've already began our Gulag, at Guantanamo and Bagram Air Base and Diego Garcia.
