In a way, this kind of reminds me of an interview I read awhile back. It was with a German who'd lived through World War II. He said he could tell Germany was losing the war by listening to the Nazi propaganda broadcasts. The interviewer asked him how, and the man said he knew because the "victories" kept coming closer and closer.
