"I've installed ZA Pro V.4 (still trying to figure out whether to allow persistent cookies plus the assorted other options... would love to see how others have configured their ZA Pro V4... ad blocker, etc. work great and, yes, I left the e-mail scan active together with NAV 2003 autoprotect e-mail in and out scan and, so far no problems), BoClean, AdAware (free version), Spyware Blaster, Spyware Guard, Trojan Hunter and RegCleaner Ver 4.3, build 780."

oooh, you've been busy i see. i configure ad blocker on high, cookies on medium, mobile code control ON with everything *except* block javascript checked. i run things this way until i am denied access to a file i want to download or some other process, then i back zap off until the process works. then i put it back.

so it's not set and forget for me. keep in mind i am still test driving the software (in a 30 day evaluation period), and i may ultimately opt for less stringent settings.

BOClean just released v4.11. hope you got that. it's a great upgrade, with lots of added functionality. i installed the upgrade on all three operating systems last night.

SpywareBlaster also has a new upgrade out today, v2.2. the server is not working for liveupdates, but the new program comes with 8/30 defs. you can still download the executable from the net and install the program. it is, as always, a slick piece of work from the developer, javacool. i also installed it on three operating systems tonight.

RegCleaner still scares me.... A lot of registry entries and programs show up that I never heard of and some were modified just a few days ago, but some of the entries point to programs I do have. If it doesn't reboot, can I use "boot with last good configuration" and then restore from Regcleaner's backup files... if I can get there?...or suggestions about using RegCleaner?"

if it scares you, maybe you should respect that. i won't tell you to forge ahead into territory that is uncharted and frightening. all i can say is that when run properly, i have great faith in the program's capabilities.

when you open RegCleaner, you see all the software on your computer.if you want more skinny on any of those listed items, right-click it and choose Advanced info.

then go up to the top menu and select...

options|registry cleanup|backups|create only one backup file

then...

options|registry cleanup|method|manual

next go to...

tools|registry cleanup|do them all

RegCleaner then starts analyzing your registry. if it finds any invalid entries, this is where i can say i have always felt 100% comfortable removing what RegCleaner finds here. added info can be found by right-clicking the invalid entries.

i know this doesn't address every single thing you have asked about, but i replied to what i could for now.

congratulations on taking the initiative in putting a top drawer security plan in place
