Japan to pay China Y100 mil over WWII gas leak Tuesday, September 2, 2003 at 14:21 JST TOKYO — Japan plans to pay 100 million yen mainly to victims of last month's leak of mustard gas from barrels Japanese troops abandoned in China at the end of World War II, a government source said Tuesday. The government is considering that part of the money will cover hospital fees and provide compensation as a token of sympathy for the victims — a man who was killed in Qiqihar, Heilongjiang Province, northeastern China, and more than 40 others who were sickened, the source said.
