Your points are good ones, just not related to Mike's original point about the Bush folk having won two wars. His administration, for good or ill, won both wars with the military Clinton left. So they need to quit barfing about it.

Your point that the Afghanistan stuff was less than no big deal, is one I completely agree with. Calling it a "war" is more than stretch.

As for the Bush military improvements by the time of the Iraqi invasion, we would need to itemize them and I'm not particularly interested. My guess is there were some, so whose military it is is fairly debatable. But I would guess that after 8 years of Clinton as opposed to 2 years of Bush, it's mostly Clinton.

As for the leadership issue, no doubt it played some part. My own guess is that it's quite small at least from the White House level in terms of the perceived morality of the President.

One can also argue there has been just as much meddling from the top with Bush folk, i.e., Rumsfeld insistence on his way. I recall Clinton did a great deal of that with Kosovo and Bosnia. But, in each instance I know about, it's defensible as civilian leadership. Whether it's good military strategy is a different question.
