It does not matter one iota whether the phone is "free" or not. Either the consumer pays upfront for the phone, or the "free" phone is paid for by the wireless companies with the hope your revenue streams from your years of service will pay for it and then some. IOW, every phone("free" or not) is a real sale from the vantage view of the chipmakers and cell phone manufacturers.
