It's an odd thing. Some people have enough insight and knowledge of the human behavior of regular people to achieve an understanding of war without really having served in combat. On the other hand, some people seem incapable of that and they continuously underestimate the will, comittment and determination of the other side. They also seem to be able to easily dismiss the loss of life as "acceptable," even when the goals are of questionable value or the likelihood of success is small.
I suspect, therefor, that for those people it is clear that combat would give them additional insights. For instance it's clear that Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Rice, Wolfowitz, Perle and others could use a little insight and if they'd had Kerry's experience, they'd have it. |
