If the people in New Zealand had DIC (disseminated intravascular coagulopathy) seems like the news reports should have mentioned that, as it is significant. People with DIC have a tendency to bleed out of any place there is a wound and have thrombosis and organ failure. You can get DIC from a lot of different viruses, like Hanta and Ebola, as well as bacterial infections like plague. I worked on a case where a kid got it from Epstein Barr syndrome, but he was immune-suppressed due to a kidney transplant. It took him a long time to die.

Other zebras are smallpox, tularemia, lassa, marburg . . . .
