WAYNE, N.J. — Integrated Device Technology (IDT) is looking to maintain its position as the top content-addressable memory (CAM) vendor by acquiring IBM's network search engine product design efforts for an undisclosed amount.

Network search engines are CAM-based devices used in networking equipment designs to handle functions like storage and search of route tables. IBM, which also makes switch fabrics for networking designs, has been developing both a 4.5- and 18-Mbit CAM to complement it networking IC offerings. However, with the networking sector still in a funk and a ton of other players already building net search engines, IBM has opted out and handed over its development efforts to IDT.

Under terms of the agreement, IDT will acquire the intellectual property for the 4.5- and 18-Mbit NSEs. IBM will serve as the foundry for these NSE devices. The search engine chips will be developed in a 0.13-micron copper process.

Initial product samples are available now.
