Marshall's essay is well thought-out, internally consistent, and sufficiently dosed with images of neocon zealotry to attract the attention of those who are predisposed to see things his way.

But it fails miserably for one simple reason: It does not mention once how 9/11 changed the nature of our struggle with political Islam.

Not confronting political Islam is suicidal in more ways than one. Do nothing and our oil supplies are put in jeopardy. Are you ready for a long-lasting Depression in Western economies?

I don't agree with the way the Bush Administration has tackled post-war events. The planning has been atrocious. While lip service was given to the long-term nature of our commitment, the Administration did not emphasize enough how deep our commitment to changing the face of the Middle East must be in order for it to succeed. Moreover, the Administration has clearly neglected its previous emphasis on the roadmap. Finally, the Administration has done a horrible job of marketing its ME efforts to our allies, all of whom share our interests. In a word, Bush has acted like an ADD-addled teenager who hourly loses sight of his goals and how to achieve them.

These bungled aspects of a necessary policy do not change the fact that it is an imperative of our foreign policy as our immediate security and economic interests are in play. Ignoring the cancer created by political Islam is ultimately self-destructive. Marshall seems content with a policy only an ostrich could love.
