You forget that one of the goals of the war in Iraq was to plant the infrastructure for a substantial more or less permanent military presence in the ME. Iraq will do as well as any other place. Saudi Arabia no longer fit the bill.

Iraq was and is simply a well-located piece of real estate and Saddam was stupid enough to provide the high-profile excuse.
