mr mark, thank you for finding out that the Protector Plus 2000 diskette is not bootable. I have made a bootable diskette for XP and it boots into A:. After that I can use the old Norton rescue disk made for Win98. I'll try to combine the two on one disk.

Meanwhile I run Norton Disk doctor [with 'fix errors' unchecked] before powering down in the evening. It only takes a few minutes. My thinking is that if the HD boot sector is corrupted in the morning, then it must have been corrupted before shutting down. I just tried chkdsk in MS DOS and it runs and identifies any errors, but cannot fix them unless it is rerun at boot. The command is chkdsk /f
