We should quit now- meant quitting the rhetorical garbage about 9/11 changing everything. You really don't get it, do you? The changes brought by 9/11 are not imaginary. They are real and they are based on fact. The planning, the financing, the sophistication, and the methods of the attack brought home the fact that we are dealing not with an occasional madman setting off a bomb here and there--for which the proper response is restraint--but with a well-managed large-scale enterprise capable of successfully executing large-scale events. On our soil. Repeat: on our soil. If you don't understand why 9/11 changed everything, then there's little I can do.
