Chambers wasn't talking directly to the media. He was speaking to institutional investors at the Cowen conference. An hour later a Cisco spokeswoman issued a statement with as much backtracking as possible, talking about how August is a slow month, etc. And then Chambers spoke with reporters and tried his best to downplay what he said at the conference.
