TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Nanya Technology Corp. plans to spend nearly US$540 million on new chip plants and equipment in 2003, higher than the estimate of around US$400 million it gave earlier in the year, according to a Dow Jones report.

Strengthening demand for dynamic random access memory chips, and corresponding short supply, has led to the exanded spending plans, the report quoted a Nanya spokeswoman as saying.

Nanya plans to spend US$333 million in 2003 to upgrade equipment at two existing semiconductor wafer fabs and to share US$413 million in planned spending with Infineon Technologies AG on the companies' Inotera Memories Ltd. joint venture.

Nanya has also revealed preliminary capex plans for 2004, saying it plans to spend US$180 million on its own plants, while shared spending on the joint venture plant would rise to US$882 million, the report said.
