mr. mark thx for suggestion but (and perhaps this is because my win98 was an upgrade CD) my system tools does not contain the items you suggest I should run. Instead it is the really lame system tools only such as scan disk, disk defrag, etc. I tried a few searches but did not find the tools you describe. Of course my ME machine at home has none of these issues ;-)
