Short term covered calls, next month or 2, do not afford much downside protection relative to the risk at the top even if they are rich.

Long term covered calls, 6 months or so, offer more of a premium, possibly 10 to 15% for out of the money, but I would use them when I thought prices got too far ahead, not at the top.

If you think you are at the top, sell! It will be very difficult because everyone else will think there are huge gains ahead. If you are able to compound the problem with options and still act correctly, you are a better man than I think I am.
