I agree, c2, that not a great deal should be made of the assumption that the chiefs did an end run around the civilian folk at DOD. It's interesting both that it is being recounted and that the tale includes the notion that it was the source of the Bush UN turn around.

I come to the following conclusions, and please excuse a bit of scrambled thought or typing because I'm watching the Jets-Redskin game out of the corner of the left eye. First, if true, those divisions may or may not solidify into something else. If not, they are obviously meaningless policy matters. If so, we'll know about it. There is plenty of source material for them to grow. But that's a future thing, not so much a present thing.

Second, the UN turn around is a very large matter. I continue to think it's source lies more in Rove gaining Bush's ear that the Iraq issue will kill him in 04 unless he can neutralize it. It's domestic politics driven more than Iraqi dilemma driven.

Finally, the speculation Josh Marshall offered that this move my cause tensions between the serious neoconservatives in his administration and the more practical politicians is definitely something to keep a serious eye on.
