as for your problems getting Office updates, i note that you said you were successful only when you shut down all of the security programs on your computer... " I turned off ZAP, NAV auto-protect, Trojan Hunter, SpyBlaster and SpyGuard" ... i'll just comment that IMO it is not good practice to close down AVs and ATs and firewalls when connected to the net and downloading programs.

as a matter of fact, that is a critical time to have those components in place, up and running.
