Bush was in the Guard and was required to report regularly. He failed to report for 13 months in 1972, the same year he refused to take a military drug test and was rumored to have been arrested in Alabama for a cocaine violation, hushed up by the family. The same year BTW that I was partying and saw lots of coke in high society New England and New York with the Kennedy kids, GOP politicians' kids, etc. It was the thing to do. Only the elite party dudes had it and it was a status symbol. So that figures, especially since Bush was an admitted alcoholic later on.

Bush did train on jets for awhile, but he gave it up as soon as he got close to potentially being called to Vietnam. Prior to GW running for president, a group from his office paid a visit to his old military base and "cleansed" his files.

awolbush.com for the details.
