Distributed power does take a load off the grid. Look at Capstone Turbine (CPST) which makes very small turbines which can run on NG or some oil & food waste products.

The other improvement taht can be done with the grid in the North east is better instrumentation & communication - - right now it's stuck in 1965...

I'm going to try to get John Dizard's FT column of about a week ago on why utilites wnat their own control rooms...
