Active Power signs Fuji deal
Austin-based Active Power Inc. has signed a distribution agreement with Fuji Electric of Japan for Fuji to sell Active Power's CleanSource DC products in Japan, Active Power announced Thursday.


The CleanSource DC energy storage system acts as a replacement or supplement to batteries in uninterruptible power supply systems, which are called UPS systems. CleanSource DC is available in several power ratings ranging from 100 kilowatts to 2000 kilowatts.

A value of the agreement wasn't released.

"We are confident that Japanese users will welcome the technology," says Kenta Takahashi, general manager of the Power Supply Systems Group for Fuji.

"In fact, many Japanese users are already interested in the flywheel," he says. "The environmental friendliness and the low life-cycle costs of this technology will no doubt appeal to users."

Active Power's CleanSource flywheel energy system stores electricity for backup power at businesses. Active Power [Nasdaq: ACPW] energy storage systems are used by hospitals, manufacturing plants, utilities and data centers. Along with a standby generator, CleanSource UPS from Active Power can create a power system that protects against extended power outages and rolling blackouts, the company says.
