why that many large ISP are going with Total Control

The same reason the same large ISPs are going with the MAX and MAX/TNT. If you are a large ISP, a PSI or UUNET, for example, you must support ALL your customers regardless of the type of modem they own. This means putting in MAX (or Cisco or Livingston) boxen for the K56 and 3COM boxen for the X2. Both sides make a big PR thing out of putting equipment in a site thought of as belonging to the competition.

Do you know how many modems that went to COMS ?

That is the crux of it all, isn't it? The COMS press release didn't say. A week ago ASND says `PSI selects TNT' and today COMS says `PSI selects Total Control'. I suspect both are true, but at least the ASND press release mentioned a number (will expand the ISP's capacity by 40,000 ports). See ascend.com for the ASND press release.
