"Thrust into the swirling midst of the tyranny of being alive ." Yeah...that was it! A healthy mother senses when the "feeling" of baby is becoming overwhelming. Baby will usually try to break eye contact at that point and look away. Healthy mothers simply "know" when to engage and disengage, etc. Others with too much personal baggage, "stalk" the feelings of their little creature and create a life-long confusion with anxiety and excitement and a problem with the cortico-limbic loops resulting in depresssion and other difficulties in encountering the environment.
