Brownback Urges Return to Coal and Nuclear Power Plants

Senator Sam Brownback says he favors returning to coal and nuclear power plants.

The Kansas Republican spoke Tuesday to the Wichita Chamber of
Commerce.

He said natural gas isn't plentiful enough for all the power plants that use it.

Brownback also said the final national energy bill likely will include provisions to boost ethanol production, increase wind and other renewable energy sources, and make more use of nuclear energy.

His comments drew criticism from the attorney for the state chapter of the Sierra Club.

Charles Benjamin said Kansas could produce maybe one-third of the nation's electricity from wind power.

Benjamin said Brownback should encourage wind power rather than promote what he described as polluting coal plants, and unsafe nuclear plants.
