Just came across a report on 1996 Worldwide Router Market Review put out by IDC in April this year. Proteon actually was not doing too badly. Below are some of the findings and comments:

. Worldwide router shipment went up from 1.7% share in CY1995 to 4.5% share in CY1996 (ranked fourth behind the Big Three (CSCO, BAY, COMS)

. Worldwide router revenue went up from 1.4% share in CY1995 to 2.3% share in CY1996

. US router shipment went up from 1.4% share in CY1995 to 5.3% in CY1996

Some positive comments:

"What is surprising considering this strong showing by the top-tier vendors are the gains made by vendors such as IBM (2.1% to 2.7% of units) and OpenRoute/Proteon (1.4% to 5.3% of units) in the U.S. market. Both vendors are enjoying much success by selling low-priced, simple products (e.g., IBM's 2210 and OpenRoute's Globetrotter) to cost-constrained and expertise-short smaller business remote corporate offices."

"Overall, Cisco, Bay Networks, and 3Com continue to dominate the router market, accounting for 75.2% of unit shipments and 86.3% of revenue in 1996. However, a number of vendors (e.g., IBM and OpenRoute/Proteon) were able to show significant improvements in unit shipments and/or revenues, mostly in the low-end segment."

Could there still be life in PTON after all?
