Appreciation of Chinese currency has seemed like something that has to happen. And it will happen by 2007, as WTO agreements require the currency to float. John Snow made a recent trip to jawbone for such a development, to no avail.

China has pegged its currency to USD. Though Japan has no peg, BOJ sells yen to push it down against the dollar. Many are not aware that Japan's trade surplus with China is now roughly equal to its surplus with the US -- japantimes.co.jp

Walmart is now the 8th largest destination of Chinese exports, the first seven being sovereign nations.

Until a better hypothesis comes along, I'll go with this one: three powerful economies have a mutual interest in dollar status quo.
