Let's cut to the chase.

Rumsfeld, as Ashcroft did earlier, is the attack dog attempting to intimidate the critics of the President's policy.

TR is one of many statesmen who has decried that, whether you agree or disagree with the harsh terminology, the more important issue is how to deal with such suppression of dissent in a Democracy. This thread is an microcosm of that effort to either discuss the issue, or avoid the issue and discuss terminology.

The attempt in these proclamations and policies is to remake our civil society into a martial one. That makes things "so much easier", as Bush famously and jokingly said about dictatorships.

The danger in this situation is that without a loyal opposition, which is weak-kneed anyway, we have an end to sober discourse and have a lockstep GOP in control of all branches of gov't in a runaway policy machine that chews up the Bill of Rights, the Treasury, and can quite easily create World War.
