John,
But without admitting any wrongdoing, the bush speech was conciliatory both to nations who opposed us and to domestic opponents of the war.
I heard buchanan adopt the extreme leftist view that we should just pack it in in iraq. He used the analogy of vietnam where we fought alongside of hundreds of thousands of locals and where we had the support of many southerners. In Iraq, he asked, who will fight alongside of us? It is a good question. He also added that since we cut and rrun in vietnam anyway, we should have done it earlier as we should do now in iraq.
But vietnam cut and run this time really would be a disaster for the region and for american credibility in the world imo. So the larger question now is where we go from here. Internationalize it, yes. At home bipartisanship in making policy, yes. Will Bush offer that? and if offered will the dems refuse because it might injure their chances in 04? Of course it is to bushes advantage to offer it and the dems will have to make that choice between political gain and the lt interests of the US. I believe a responsible democrat other than lieberman needs to fight the dean forces over this issue. A statesmanlike democrat would have a great chance at independent voters like myself so perhaps biPart is in the dems true interests. Sorry for the ramble and stream of consciousness rambling. Mike
