Well, let's see, as if by some sort of magic, one had to inherit Bush's mistakes in Iraq. Today. Right now. What would one do? First, note that it was good Saddam was gone but that the doing of it was not in the best of American traditions. Second, make a firm commitment that the US has no aims to be a colonial power and thus wishes the entire reconstruction to be run as a UN mandate. Third, begin replacing US troops with as many troops from Muslim countries as possible, commensurate with what the UN can supply. Fourth, make it as clear as possible that the war against Al Q and its minions would become the very first priority, once again and would do everything possible to comb those Afghan mountains, would put as much pressure as possible on countries for which there is good evidence they are harboring Al Q types, perhaps that's Iran. Fifth, pass legislation to end the portions of both Bush tax cuts that go to wealthy taxpayers. The better to pay for Bush's follies, including funding, unfortunately, rather large portions of the rebuilding of Iraq. Sixth, appoint justices to the court system that respect the right to privacy, the need to overcome the discrimination of the past, etc. Seventh, ah well, you get the point, Mike.
Just back from the track. Marvelous day in Jersey to get the workout done. Low 70s, no humidity, cool breeze. |
