Brumar, if I recall correctly, what Ike did for Nasser then was because of several other reasons besides just oil. Nasser had the Suez canal under his control and that was very strategic then than now. Besides, the rising tide of communism in Asia after WWII was another factor. And Nasser was one of the leaders of the non-aligned movement then. The non-aligned movement was more leaning towards communism (because of Chou en lai) than towards the West. So Ike had to consider all these factors then.

Now politics is not that exciting. Instead it is the politics of oil and terrorism only. And off course Israel is a bigger factor now than in post WWII. Hatred for the US from the Arab world is significantly more because of US' almost blind support of Israeli actions.
