The political dominants in China have always insisted on a re-absorption of Taiwan. Opposing that action has been the will of the majority of Taiwanese (not easily overcome militarily, given the surfeit of US supplied military hardware, but do-able), and the defacto US military umbrella (not so easily overcome). They are setting up a no-win situation for us there. The Chinese communists have always placed their geopolitical ambitions ahead of economic ambitions, and IMO would be willing to force sacrifice of their burgeoning economy to attain success.
