You are deadly accurate about Greenspan. I have read much of his earlier writings and in my opinion, his early analysis/comments on the causes of the depression are among the best ever produced. As you note, he is currently doing precisely the same things he so powerfully criticized in his earlier writings.

Is he "bought and paid for"? Sure looks like it. Or perhaps he just doesn't have the will power to tackle nasty situations. I get a sense that he loves the power his position provides and that he believes that he will not be around when the whole house of cards collapses.

Whatever the cause, he is going to go down in history as one of the worst fed chiefs ever..... and it will be a rap that is fully deserved. When one recognizes that he KNOWS where his polices are taking us, his behavior becomes all the more reprehensible.
