I am less concerned about paying for the tire than I am about the principle. It had occurred to me that my credit card or insurance company might pick up the tab if need be although I am not inclined to allow them to do that on my behalf at this point. What I am is really pissed at the company. I expected some consideration on my bill for what they put me through. I would have settled for an expression of concern as to the well-being of those aboard. Of course, I got neither.

I filled out an accident/damage/incident report, which the fellow referred to as an "incident report" and it is not yet clear that they will charge me. I have read the agreement and it speaks to "damage" to the car independent of responsibility for the damage. But it is totally absurd to construe that to mean failure of the automobile itself, like the muffler up and falling off, unless I was driving off road or something else to provoke the damage. To me, damage means burning a hole in the upholstery with a cigarette, not a broken fan belt or ruptured radiator or a clogged valve.

Tires don't blow out with just a couple of hundred miles on them unless they are defective, seems to me. I'm quite certain that I didn't drive over anything that would puncture the tire. I noticed that all the tires seemed soft when I picked the car up. I didn't think much about it because the tires on my car look soft, too, when they're correctly inflated and because they presumably gave me a car with the correct tire pressure. The car had 180 miles on it when I picked it up and I added less than 200 to that during my five day rental. Shouldn't have happened.

I will wait and see whether they pursue the matter or not. I'm not inclined to roll over without a fight because the threat was too great and because I didn't like their attitude.
