4 soldiers (or perhaps only 3 out of a group of 4) gang rape a 16 year old girl. The locals are outraged and the US army puts them on trial with the prosecutor asking for the death penalty. Supposedly the victim has to testify to get the death penalty and while the army can't compel her to testify is she doesn't remain available to testify throughout the whole trial then the death penalty can not be imposed. The defense lawyer (played by Kirk Douglas) digs up gossip about the girl. He warns the girl's dad to pull her out of the trial she won't be able to deal with his cross examination. When the girl goes to the stand he attacks her with her apparent exhibitionism and tries to assert that she was upset at the fact that her boy friend wouldn't go as far sexually as she wanted (which was true) so she wanted sex from the soldiers (he uses the fact that she was standing naked by the side of the river to bolster his case that she wanted it). His intent is not as much to convince the jury that it really was consensual as much as to push the girl out of the trial by making her break down emotionally. He succeeds in doing that. The girl thinking her reputation in the town is ruined agrees to run off with her 19 year old boyfriend, but the police catch them and arrest the boy, he forged a signature on one of his parents checks so that he would have some money when he leaves and he is arrested for that. The girl commits suicide.
