"Compare Iraq to Pakistan, or Egypt or Saudi Arabia -- each of these countries has very active religious extremist communities -- you did not see anything like that under Saddam. He ran a brutal, secular state."

If you are an Arab trying to enter Egypt and you have a beard, you will be arrested at the boarder. The suspicion is that you may be an extremist. Likewise, if you are seen practicing the fundamentals of the Islamic religion. The same thing would occur in Syria or Lybia, even though they all call themselves "Islamic states." If it were found that you were in America speaking against the leadership of one of these countries, it is likely that you would disappear at the boarder and never be seen again.

Why is this? It is because fundamental extremist organizations are active in the underground in these countries. If they were allowed freedom of expression or assembly, the 'leadership' is afraid a revolution would follow. The same thing existed in the Saddam Regime to the Nth power.

Saudi is a corrupt kingdom. The Saud family is in power. They are one of many tribal factions that exist in the region known as Saudi Arabia. They don't hesitate to imprison or violently squash any one who could threaten their power. There are many extremist organizations within the borders and lots of organizations outside of Saudi Arabia who are actively planning to overthrow the kingdom.

Pakistan is controlled and governed by a military dictator who successfully completed a coup on the elected president a few years ago. Pakistan is very close to a revolution from within, fueled by the presence of Al-Quaida and similar extremist organizations within Pakistan.

"...each of these countries has very active religious extremist communities -- you did not see anything like that under Saddam. "

That is the most uninformed statement, I have read in a long time.
