The one problem with that chart is that it doesn't include interest payments. Some portion of the interest rate you receive on paper money is compensation for people like "Al the Printa". More importantly IMO is that the Fed currently has short term interest rates set at below natural market levels in order to prop up all the damage Al did in the 90s. As a result, after tax and inflation returns on MMs and short term treasuries are now negative. That's why I've been buying gold. IMHO, that accounts for some of the recent rally in gold. There are lots of people besides me that don't like getting raped and pillaged by government, central bankers, and Wall St to compensate for the unwinding of their last rape and pillage during the bubble.
