Vote on Libya U.S. and Allies Set to Search Vessels more > From Times Wire Reports Most of the more than 200 U.S. Marines who went ashore in Liberia last month apparently contracted malaria, with about 43 hospitalized, physicians said. Although the diagnosis has been confirmed in only 15% of the troops, they and their officers said nearly all of the Marines who spent the two weeks ashore reported at least mild symptoms. Most patients are being treated at National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Md. The outbreak occurred even though troops were taking medicine. They were also supposed to be using insect repellent and uniforms treated with insecticides.
