What argument, John? What does Friedman want Sharon to do when he says "invest in the Palestinians"? Investing in the Palestinians with Arafat in charge is like investing in the Iraqis with Saddam in charge. Arafat still has 40,000 police - what he has done with them for the last three years shows his intentions. Abu Ala can do nothing without Arafat's consent.

There is no peace process. There is a war process going on now. And so Friedman moans that wars never work, and it's dead-end for both sides, blah blah blah. It hasn't been tried, not as it's going to be tried now. The closest thing was Operation Defensive Shield, and that did drop the level of suicide bombings and reduce Palestinian support for them. I don't think the Bush administration will spend too much effort urging restraint on Israel this time.

One of the interesting questions that nobody is asking right now is not, why is Israel fighting Hamas? but why isn't Israel fighting al Aqsa and Fatah? I smell a cutting-out maneuver, divde and conquer. I note that the EU unexpectedly declared Hamas a terrorist organization last week, with very little fanfare or notice. That will make it harder for the Pals to organize protests when the Israelis attack. Could this have been the real purpose of the 'roadmap'?
