i wanted to see if Dolinar agreed with Steve Gibson ("no rational personal who understands the complex nature of security would trust wireless networking") about wireless security, or the lack thereof.
one would think not... i mean, he's written so many pieces on the subject of wireless networking. why would a guy who feels the technology is not secure spend any time helping people set it up?
i found this Dolinar paragraph that seems to cut to the bone...
"If you want to keep people out of your network, you need to enable encryption. That's your call. The only downside is that encryption tends to slow down the connection and is less than neighborly. I mean, if you don't have anything to hide, why not share the wealth? On the other hand, if you do have something to hide, I'm not sure I'd trust it on a wireless network anyway."
i interpret that as him saying even encryption, ultimately, is not going to protect you on a wireless network. he's saying, i think, that if you use wireless, be aware that it is not secure, and be willing to share your information.
which sounds a lot like Gibson's, "don't use it unless you truly would not mind running a wire out into the front yard and offering to let anyone who wants to plug-in and see what they can do on your network." |
