"around the time his Islamic Jihad was merging with al Qaeda. "

The timing of any cash payments will be critical, since Zawahiri did not have the same interests as Bin Laden, prior to the merger of Al Jihad and Bin Laden's organization in 1998. And their August PR release (1998) seems to have started the ball rolling. I am sure the administration will use the data anyway, even if the timing doesn't work- but I hope news sources will investigate closely. I hope we get to see the Saudi contributions to the real Al Qaeda organization, post 1998- put beside Saddam's "contribution" to Zawahiri, if it exists. The Saudi money will be much more impressive. Which is, of course, why that sort of information was suppressed in the 9/11 report. Ah hypocrisy!

"Some Egyptians believe that al-Zawahiri's anger toward the United States was due to what many Afghan Arabs felt was a betrayal by the CIA, which helped fund the fight against the Soviets in Afghanistan and then abandoned its support as the country slipped into tribal anarchy.

But others date al-Zawahiri's wrath to 1998, when the United States pushed for a number of al Jihad members to be extradited from Albania to stand trial in Egypt for terrorism.
