Maybe it is because, living in suburbia, I don't feel as much at the center. That might either be a false sense of security, or an overreaction by those in more vulnerable positions.

The decrease in security has to do with the way that America seems to be painting a target on its back. That, and the bumbling of the post-9/11 'security' plans (e.g. our airport 'security') make me feel that we're heading in the wrong direction - i.e. making more terrorists, but not increasing our defenses. Whereas pre-9/11, there was a small cadre of fanatics who based their grievances on torturous twistings of the Koran coupled with our benevolent presence in Saudi Arabia, we seem to have given more fodder to the terrorist recruiters with our misguided adventure into Iraq.

We've said 'bring em on', but I fear we're not any more ready for 'em than 9/11/01.
