Semitool Outlook: Still Sees Loss Excl Chg 8c-11c/Shr

Thursday September 11, 5:20 pm ET

KALISPELL, Mont. (Dow Jones)--Semitool Inc. plans to record $15 million to $17 million in fiscal fourth-quarter charges to write down inventory, leading to a loss nearly five times wider than the company previously projected.

In a press release Thursday, Semitool said it expects to record a loss of 40 cents to 47 cents a share for the fourth quarter, which ends Sept. 30. In July, the chip equipment maker predicted a fourth-quarter loss of 8 cents to 11 cents a share.

A Semitool spokesman said the wider-than-expected loss is entirely because of the charges, which are related to certain product lines being replaced with newer technology. The company still expects its loss excluding the charges to be 8 cents to 11 cents a share, the spokesman said.

Thomson First Call's (News - Websites) consensus analyst estimate, which excludes charges, calls for Semitool to post a loss of 9 cents a share. In the year-earlier fiscal fourth quarter, Semitool recorded a loss of $2.9 million, or 10 cents a share.

Semitool's shares were recently halted in late Nasdaq market trading at $9.09.
