OT The only reason the Japanese companies dominate mobile drives is that the customers are captive divisions.

I did not realize that Apple, whose iPods use Toshiba 1.8" drives exclusively, was a part of the kairetsu.

Now there is much talk of 1" HDDs. It seems that Japan dominates every form factor smaller than 3.5". You may say that it is mostly because Japan Inc. is making most of the devices that incorporate them. But it doesn't change the fact that the Big 3 seem to be dominating a much more mature segment of the market, although they seem to be on a hot streak lately as they have been finding new niches for the 3.5" form factor in Tivos, SAN, etc.
