Take a look at the bios of the guys who are working for the DD companies: almost all of them had experience with IBM in the 70s and/or 80s. This is especially true of the assemblers WDC, MXO and STX, but even for many of the peripheral companies. And IBM, the chief example of vertical integrators in the industries, with huge R&D, could never make a profit in the sector in the 90s.

Vertical integration isn't a panacea in such a fast moving sector as DDs.
