"Vote of confidence"? Not the way I see it.

To me it is a totally cynical deal, with the interests of Apple the company, its customers and its shareholders, way last. It has been a triumph for the spin doctors, with "benevolent Bill saves Apple" headlines everywhere, followed by a carefully cultivated "opinion" that this settles any antitrust speculation hanging over MSFT.

Best $150m he ever spent, I reckon. He would have paid that just to get IE shipped with every box.

What really scares me is that someone could read anything at all positive into it. But it seems some people can, so I'll just take by bat and go.
