Certainly private site like SI have a perfect right to enforce whatever policies they choose (on a consistent basis of course, but that's a whole other can of worms). The problem is that if you are going to throw a party with lots of guests, many of them anonymous, be prepared to do some seriously heavy cleaning. And, if you want to keep your guests coming back, the worst thing you can do is give them unreasonable expectations on what they'll encounter upon their visit.
