I don't know who was the first nation (okay, well I looked it up, see the P.S.),

Something wrong with admitting that it was the USSR which was the first nation to recognize the state of Israel?

The point is that the USSR's strategy has ALWAYS been to expand their influence into the middle east, if only to take advantage of the ebbing influence of Britain and France in the region.

US support for Israel really didn't manifest itself until 1973, when it appeared that Egypt stood a good chance of defeating Israel. Nixon initiated a major airlift (Nickel Grass) of supplies and weaponry (including only 29 tanks) to replace the predominantly British and French made stuff which had been blown up by Soviet made AT-3 Saggers and T-62s. Israel had not TOW missiles at the time, so the USSR providing them to Egypt was seen as a major escalation and disturbance in the balance of power).

But then again, few people mention that the Soviets were conducting the VERY SAME KIND OF AIRLIFT RESUPPLY to Egypt and Syria...

B*tch all you want about US support for Israel, but it was the Soviets who were the ones who supplied that advanced weaponry to the Egyptians and Syrians that brought the US onto the side of the Israelis.

So who's to blame? The Soviets, or the Arab states who bought their weapons from them?

And why is it that people of your ilk constantly opt to mention the US role in the region as if we were the only nation involved in trying to shape events and influence governments there?

There's more than sufficient blame to go around for explaining why the Arab-Israeli conflict still exists.
