The argument is hardly ridiculous, K. There's a strong argument, one that's infected political risk taking, that one of the principle reasons Bush senior lost in 92 was because he lost the right wing of his party with his tax raises. Whether true or not, if has a large impact on political thinking. As for Clinton raising taxes, it took a majority in both houses of congress; not one rep in either house voted for it. So it was not easy then.

And it will get harder because the anti-tax rhetoric is buried more deeply in political discourse and because it successfully elides the distinction between upper income cuts and the rest. If that little knot could be cut, then I might agree with you.

I'm afraid Krugman is right when he assumes those sunset provisions will not set. It will take a different political culture than the one we have now.
